Synopsis “Don Quixote”
Prologue
Don Quixote wanders the world to glorify his name with glorious exploits. He appoints his servant Sancho Panza as his squire. They set off across the world so that Don Quixote can find the “lady of his heart”, Dulcinea.
ACT I
Scene 1. Festive revelry in the square in Barcelona. Kitri, the daughter of the innkeeper Lorenzo, is in love with Basil, who works as a barber. Her father is against this relationship and wants to marry his daughter to the rich Hidalgo Gamache. Kitri resolutely refuses to submit to her father’s will. When the revelry reaches its peak, Don Quixote appears in the square with his squire, Sancho Panza. Lorenzo invites the unusual gentleman to the tavern. Sancho Panza remains in the square surrounded by young people, who joke with him. Meanwhile, Don Quixote notices Kitri. The “glorious knight” imagines that she is the beautiful Dulcinea. But Kitri disappears. She flees with Basil. Lorenzo, Gamache, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza set off in pursuit.
ACT II
Image 2. While searching for Kitri, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza come across a gypsy camp. The gypsies offer them hospitality and a place to stay.
Image 3. In a dream, Cupid and the Queen of the Forest Fairies appear to Don Quixote, showing him the “Lady of his Heart”, Dulcinea in the form of Kitri. The knight watches the beautiful Dulcinea play.
Image 4. Kitri and Basil are having fun in the tavern. Lorenzo, Gamache, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza appear. The innkeeper wants to immediately announce Kitri’s engagement to Gamache. But Basil fakes suicide. Kitri weeps desperately over the motionless body of her beloved. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza resent and accuse Lorenzo of being too fierce. They chase the annoying Hidalgo and force Lorenzo, threatening him with weapons, to agree to the marriage of Kitri and Basil. Basil collapses, he no longer needs to pretend to be “mortally wounded”. A general celebration begins, and Don Quixote and Sancho Panza leave the tavern.
Image 5. A general celebration takes place for the wedding of Kitri and Basil. The “famous knight” is the guest of honor at that joyful event. During the celebration, the two fighters for justice and freedom leave the celebration, eager for new “exploits”.
