Synopsis
Act I
Leporello is in front of Donna Anna’s villa and complains about his duties as a servant of Don Giovanni. His master is only interested in love adventures that often throw both of them into life’s trials and dangers. Don Giovanni appears, manages to enter her room and forcefully extort love from Donna Anna, the daughter of the Commendatore. In the process, she manages to break away from him and asks for help from her father. Trying to protect his daughter, Commendatore is killed in a duel by Don Giovanni, who flees the scene of the crime. Donna Anna returns with her fiancé, Don Ottavio finds his father dead. She and her fiancé swear revenge.
At dawn, Don Giovanni flirts with a high-society traveler. She is Donna Elvira, a woman he once seduced in Burgos and who, driven by her love, has set out in search of him. Don Giovanni escapes by leaving his servant Leporello to entertain Donna Elvira. Wanting to dissuade her from her hopeless love, Leporello tells her the “list” of women his master has seduced.
At the tavern, peasants come to celebrate the marriage of their friends Zerlina and Masetto. Don Giovanni joins in the festivities and immediately tries to seduce the bride. The groom becomes angry, but the faithful servant Leporello manages to calm the situation, leaving Don Giovanni with the opportunity to realize his courtship of the bride Zerlina. Alone with Zerlina, Don Giovanni uses his charm, but Donna Elvira arrives, interrupts him in his evil intention and protectively removes the girl. Donna Elvira accuses him of an empty, insensitive and dark seduction. Don Giovanni is angry because Donna Elvira exposes his game.
Donna Anna, who is in mourning, and Don Ottavio arrive. Seeking justification for the situation to Donna Anna, Don Giovanni mocks Donna Elvira and declares her crazy, while attempting to seduce Donna Anna. But she recognizes the voice of the man who tried to force her love and who is the probable murderer of her father.
At his home, dressed for a wedding feast he is planning for the peasants, and in order to more easily win Zerlina, Don Giovanni drinks champagne passionately. Zerlina begs Masetto to forgive her for her alleged infidelity. Masetto hides when Don Giovanni appears from the shadows and tries to seduce Zerlina again. Three masked men enter the palace. During the party, Leporello tricks Masetto into playing a game, and Don Giovanni drags Zerlina from the room. When the girl’s scream for help attracts the attention of those present, Don Giovanni, in order to save himself, tries to accuse Leporello. At first, no one is accused, but Donna Anna and Donna Elvira remove their masks and accuse Don Giovanni, who barely manages to avoid Don Ottavio’s sword.
I I Act
Under Donna Elvira’s window, Don Giovanni serenades Don Giovanni with a mandolin and exchanges coats and hats with Leporello so that Don Giovanni can woo Donna Elvira’s maid. Leporello, disguised as Don Giovanni, leads Donna Elvira away, leaving Don Giovanni free to serenade her maid.
Masetto arrives with a group of armed peasants, determined to punish Don Giovanni. Frightened and disguised as Leporello, Don Giovanni misleads them to Leporello. Leporello reveals his identity and flees. Don Giovanni takes advantage of the moment when they are alone to beat Masetto. Zerlina arrives and gently comforts her fiancé.
At the cemetery, Leporello meets his master, where a voice warns Don Giovanni of his curse. It is actually the voice of the Commendatore, whom Leporello invites to dinner, at Don Giovanni’s suggestion, in order to clear his conscience and undo the curse. Don Giovanni hopes that the statue will reject the proposal, but she agrees to come to dinner with Don Giovanni.
Leporello is serving dinner to Don Giovanni, when Donna Elvira bursts into the room, begging Don Giovanni, with whom she is still in love, to change his mind, but he refuses.
