SHORT SYNOPSIS

The painter Cavaradossi helps the republican Angelotti, who has escaped from prison, to hide. However, the chief of police Scarpia and his agents sense the trail. Through skillful promises and threats, Scarpia extracts a confession from Tosca, the painter’s lover, and he is captured and sentenced to death. Tosca pleads for clemency, but Scarpia refuses. He would pardon him only if Tosca agrees to be his.

To save Cavaradossi, Tosca agrees, but in return she demands that Scarpia provide documents that will allow them to leave Rome safely.

It is arranged that the execution will be staged. Scarpia prepares the documents, and when he desires Tosca, she kills him with a knife. She immediately informs Cavaradossi that the execution will be a mock one.

However, Scarpia has ordered that Cavaradossi be executed for real. The order is carried out. Completely distraught, Tosca realizes she has been deceived and, before being captured by Scarpia’s agents, throws herself from the prison fortress into the abyss.
