About the Opera

The action of the opera takes place in Seville. Rosina is a young woman in love with Count Almaviva. The young and handsome Count sings beneath Rosina’s window every day in order to get closer to her.

However, Rosina is strictly guarded by the elderly doctor Bartolo, who wishes to marry her himself and does not allow her to leave the house. Figaro, Bartolo’s personal barber, helps Rosina and Almaviva meet by presenting the Count as a singing teacher.

While Figaro shaves Bartolo, Rosina and Almaviva secretly arrange their future together. To help them fulfill their love, Figaro brings a registrar and witnesses. At that moment the wedding takes place, and old Bartolo must accept the victory of youth and love.

Synopsis

Act I

A street in Seville. Count Almaviva sings a serenade to Rosina, the ward of Doctor Bartolo. The barber Figaro arrives — a cheerful and confident young man. For money and praise, he agrees to help the Count win the heart of his beloved.

Bartolo jealously guards Rosina because he intends to marry her himself. Rosina, however, loves Lindoro, who is actually Count Almaviva in disguise. Bartolo and Basilio plan to slander the Count in front of Rosina.

Figaro tries to win Rosina over for Almaviva but soon realizes it is unnecessary — Rosina already loves the Count under the name Lindoro. She gives Figaro a letter for Almaviva, and the barber happily leaves. Suddenly a soldier, apparently drunk, bursts into the house. It is the Count in disguise, who reveals himself to Rosina.

Due to the commotion in the house, Almaviva is about to be arrested, but he whispers something to the officer and the arrest is immediately cancelled. Bartolo is astonished.

Act II

Almaviva, disguised as a music teacher, gives Rosina a singing lesson. Figaro shaves Bartolo while Almaviva and Rosina secretly plan their escape.

Figaro appears again and his curiosity raises Bartolo’s suspicions. Basilio arrives to summon a notary, but the Count bribes him. In the end, everything concludes with the wedding of Almaviva and Rosina, who finally receive Bartolo’s blessing.

Duration of the performance: 150 minutes
