A story about passion, seduction, betrayal and death.
Samson and Delilah
(synopsis)
In Lemaire’s libretto the story takes place is Gaza, Palestine, around 1150 BC.
The three acts take place on three different locations: the square, DelIlah’s tent and the temple.
I ACT
The first act takes place in the square where Samson, together with the Hebrews, is rebelling against the Philistines.
II ACT
The second act takes place in the huge bed of DelIlah’s tent. The bed symbolizes a battlefield, where Delilah and Samson wage a “war” against one another.
III ACT
In the temple of the Philistines. Samson and the Hebrews are defeated by the Philistines. The Philistines dominate right until the dramatic end. Returning to the first act of the square can help us understand the stress as an enchanted time loop.
