OPERA-REQUIEM “IYOV” – Nova Opera – Kiev (Ukraine)
The opera-requiem “IYOV” is a music performance for prepared piano, cello, drums and voices. The music of the work combines minimalism and avant-garde expression, neoclassicism and rock. Polyphonic choral episodes and instrumental interludes alternate with parts which use the full range of the human voice: from classical, jazz and folk singing, to breathing, screaming, whispering and overtone singing. The opera-requiem “Iyov” is a synthesis of ancient Greek drama, baroque opera, oratorio, requiem and the techniques of postmodern theater. The work carries the mystery of the birth of a new sound inside the piano, and demonstrates the endless possibilities of the human voice. Nova Opera’s musicians create new synthetic genres and experiment with untypical, distinctive music and stage performances. The music language of their performances knows no aesthetic borders and freely unites avant-guard and rock, Gregorian choral chant and trip-hop, neobaroque and folk improvisations. In the works of the Ukranian ensemble, the achievements in traditional theatre are combined with elements of modern technology in a unique and original artistic expression.
