The Abbess allows them a brief moment of recreation before they return to their duties. Despite their ascetic life\, which is meant to be free of worldly desires\, the sisters admit that they still harbor longings from their past lives. Sister Angelica\, who has lived in the convent for seven years\, denies having any desires\, claiming she wants for nothing. However\, her fellow sisters recognize her hidden sorrow. Knowing that Angelica has received no visitors or news from her family in seven years\, they whisper of her noble background and the sin for which she was sent to the convent as punishment.\nTheir conversation is interrupted by the Nursing Sister\, who asks Angelica for a herbal remedy to soothe a sister bitten by a wasp\, noting Angelica's vast knowledge of the healing powers of plants. A sister bringing food to the convent then arrives with news: a magnificent carriage is at the gates. Angelica is visibly shaken\, desperately asking for details. The sisters realize her agitation stems from a deep longing for news of her family. When the bell announces a visitor\, they all pray that the visitor is for Angelica.\nThe prayer is answered. Angelica is summoned to the parlor where her aunt\, the Princess\, awaits. Angelica is overwhelmed\, but instead of warmth\, she is met with a cold\, formal report. The Princess informs her that the inheritance left by Angelica’s late parents is to be divided due to the upcoming marriage of her younger sister—a marriage made possible despite the shame Angelica brought upon the family. The Princess demands that Angelica sign away her claims and devote herself to penance. Angelica\, defiant\, accuses her aunt of cruelty and begs for news of the one thing she cannot renounce: her son\, who was taken from her at birth. With icy indifference\, the Princess reveals that the boy died of an illness two years ago.\nShattered by this revelation and haunted by the thought of her child dying without a mother's love\, Angelica collapses. In her despair\, she hallucinates their meeting in paradise. In an ecstatic frenzy\, she prepares a poisonous herbal concoction and takes her own life. However\, as the poison takes effect\, she realizes she has committed a mortal sin. In her final moments\, she prays desperately for mercy. She experiences a miraculous vision of the Virgin Mary\, who brings her son toward her—a sign that her penance has been accepted and she is granted ultimate redemption.\n________________________________________\n________________________________________\nPREMIERE\nGIACOMO PUCCINI\n"GIANNI SCHICCHI"\nConductor: Gianluca Martinenghi – Italy\nDirector: Pier Francesco Maestrini – Italy\nSet Designer: Guillermo Nova – Spain\nCostume Designer: Cristina Aceti – Italy\nAsst. Inspired by an episode from Dante Alighieri’s Inferno\, the plot unfolds in the house of the wealthy Buoso Donati\, who has just passed away.\nHis relatives are gathered around his body\, offering hypocritical displays of grief while secretly waiting to hear the contents of his will. Rumors circulate that Buoso has left his entire fortune to the monks of Santa Reparata. Terrified at the prospect of being disinherited\, the relatives frantically search for the document. Upon finding it\, their worst fears are confirmed: Buoso has indeed left everything to the church.\nIn their despair\, they reluctantly listen to the young Rinuccio\, who suggests seeking the help of Gianni Schicchi\, a clever newcomer to Florence known for his resourcefulness. Rinuccio\, who is in love with Schicchi's daughter Lauretta\, calls for him. Despite the family’s disdain for Schicchi’s lower social standing\, a brief argument gives way to mutual interest: the Donatis want the money\, and Schicchi wants his daughter’s happiness.\nSchicchi devises a daring and risky plan. Before the death is made public\, he will impersonate Buoso\, call a notary\, and dictate a new will. The relatives enthusiastically agree and begin dividing the assets. However\, they soon start bickering over Buoso's most valuable possessions—the mule\, the mills\, and the house in Florence. Unable to agree\, they leave the decision to Schicchi’s "sense of justice."\nAs Schicchi prepares to climb into Buoso’s bed\, each relative secretly offers him a bribe to secure the best properties for themselves. The notary arrives\, and Schicchi\, in a convincing imitation of the deceased\, begins to dictate. To the family’s horror\, when he reaches the most valuable items\, he bequeaths them to his "good friend Gianni Schicchi." The relatives are enraged and shocked by the clever deception\, but they are powerless to protest; the law in Florence punishes such fraud with the loss of a hand and exile.\nSchicchi drives the greedy relatives out of his new house\, leaving the young lovers\, Rinuccio and Lauretta\, to build their future in Florence with Buoso’s fortune.

The Duke is openly courting Countess Ceprano. The court jester\, Rigoletto\, mocks Count Ceprano\, while Marullo informs the courtiers that Rigoletto secretly keeps a young and beautiful mistress. They plot to kidnap her. The ball is interrupted by Count Monterone\, whose daughter has been dishonored by the Duke. As everyone ridicules him—Rigoletto most of all—Monterone places a curse upon both the Duke and the jester.\nDisturbed by the curse\, Rigoletto heads home. Near his house\, he encounters Sparafucile\, a professional assassin who offers his services. Inside\, Rigoletto talks tenderly with his daughter\, Gilda\, and strictly instructs the nurse\, Giovanna\, to let no one into the house. After he leaves\, the Duke arrives disguised as a poor student\, Gualtier Maldé. He bribes Giovanna to let him in and declares his love to Gilda.\nMeanwhile\, the courtiers gather outside to kidnap Gilda. They encounter Rigoletto and trick him into believing they are abducting Countess Ceprano from the neighboring palace. Blindfolded\, Rigoletto joins the plot and holds the ladder. Once they have gone\, he removes the blindfold only to discover with horror that he has assisted in the kidnapping of his own daughter. Monterone's curse begins to take root.\nAt the palace\, the courtiers are shocked when Rigoletto reveals that the girl they kidnapped is his daughter. In a fit of rage\, Rigoletto storms the Duke’s chambers. Gilda emerges in shame and runs to her father. Rigoletto swears vengeance\, while Gilda begs him to forgive the Duke.\nRigoletto strikes a deal with Sparafucile at his tavern to have the Duke murdered. He sends Gilda away disguised in men's clothing for her safety\, but she returns\, desperate to see the Duke one last time. She overhears a conversation between Sparafucile and his sister\, Maddalena\, who pleads for the Duke’s life. Sparafucile agrees to spare the Duke if he can find a substitute victim before midnight to satisfy the contract. Gilda decides to sacrifice herself. In the darkness\, Sparafucile stabs Gilda and places her body in a sack. When Rigoletto arrives to claim the body\, he prepares to throw it into the river\, but suddenly hears the Duke’s voice singing in the distance. Horrified\, he opens the sack to find his dying daughter. With her final breath\, Gilda asks for his forgiveness. Rigoletto cries out in despair as Monterone's curse is finally fulfilled.\n

On a flowery terrace overlooking the harbor\, American Naval Lieutenant Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton inspects the house he has leased through the marriage broker\, Goro. Goro has also arranged a wife for him—the geisha Cio-Cio-San\, known as Madame Butterfly. Pinkerton explains his "wanderer's philosophy" of seeking pleasure across the globe to the American Consul\, Sharpless. He is currently enchanted by the delicate Butterfly\, whose joyful singing is heard in the distance as she approaches for the wedding.\nCio-Cio-San enters surrounded by her friends and tells Pinkerton how\, following her family’s fall into poverty\, she was forced to earn a living as a geisha. Her relatives arrive\, boisterously sharing their opinions on the marriage. Butterfly shows her groom her family heirlooms and reveals her intention to convert to Christianity. The Imperial Commissioner performs the ceremony\, and the guests toast the couple. The celebration is interrupted by her uncle\, the Bonze\, a Buddhist priest\, who curses her for forsaking the religion of her ancestors. Pinkerton angrily drives the guests away. Alone in the moonlit garden\, he comforts the weeping Butterfly\, and they join in a passionate duet celebrating their love.\nACT II Three years later. Cio-Cio-San awaits her husband’s return\, her eyes fixed on the harbor. Her maid\, Suzuki\, complains that their money is almost gone\, but Butterfly remains hopeful that Pinkerton’s ship will appear on the horizon. Sharpless arrives with a letter from the officer\, but before he can read it to her\, Goro appears with a suitor: the wealthy Prince Yamadori. Butterfly rejects them both\, insisting her husband has not abandoned her.\nLeft alone with Sharpless\, the Consul begins to read the letter\, hinting that Pinkerton may not return. Butterfly stops him and reveals her child\, "Dolore" (Sorrow)\, declaring that once Pinkerton knows he has a son\, he will surely return. She vows she would rather die than return to her former life. Moved by her devotion\, Sharpless leaves without revealing the full contents of the letter. Suddenly\, a cannon shot rings out. Using a telescope\, Butterfly sees Pinkerton’s ship entering the harbor. As night falls\, she\, Suzuki\, and the child begin their long vigil.\nACT III At dawn\, Suzuki insists that Butterfly rest. Singing a lullaby to her son\, she carries him into the next room. Shortly after\, Sharpless and Pinkerton arrive\, followed by Kate\, Pinkerton’s new American wife. When Suzuki realizes who Kate is\, she agrees to help break the news to her mistress. Overcome by guilt\, Pinkerton bids a sorrowful farewell to the place where he was once happy and leaves quickly.\nWhen Butterfly rushes out\, expecting to find Pinkerton\, she encounters Kate instead. Shattered\, she agrees to give up her child only if the father comes for him in person. Left alone\, she takes the sword with which her father committed suicide. Bowing before a statue of Buddha\, she chooses to die with honor rather than live in shame. As she raises the blade\, Suzuki pushes the child into the room. With a tearful farewell\, Butterfly sends him into the garden to play and then stabs herself. As she dies\, she hears Pinkerton calling her name from the distance.\n

A ballet in two acts. Libretto and musical edition by V. Yaremenko and A. Baklan; Choreographic fragments by L. Ivanov\, M. Petipa\, and F. Lopukhov.\n \nSYNOPSIS\nACT I\nIntroduction Young Siegfried is deeply immersed in his dreams and fantasies of an imaginary girl in white. But she is only an illusion. Hoping to meet and fall in love with someone exactly like her\, he falls asleep. Suddenly\, a strange figure appears the evil sorcerer\, Rothbart. Aware of the young man's dreams\, Rothbart decides to prove that true love is merely a fiction created by writers\, poets\, and artists. He orchestrates a reality where Siegfried will experience everything: respect\, fame\, wealth\, love\, betrayal\, and remorse...\nScene I: The Castle Park The kingdom's servants dance in the meadow. Noticing the young prince sleeping in the lodge\, they are surprised; he is dressed in strange attire! Our young hero awakens. Where is he? Everything around him is unfamiliar and strange\, yet everyone bows to him. His Tutor appears and questions him about his clothes. At any moment\, his mother the Great Queen is expected to arrive!\nIt becomes clear: our hero is being mistaken for someone else specifically\, the heir to the crown\, Prince Siegfried! It appears to be a dream\, but one so unexpected and pleasant that being a Prince\, even briefly\, is alluring and intriguing. The hero is dressed in royal garments. He meets the Queen for the first time; she kisses him tenderly and gifts him the family medallion. A joyous celebration continues in honor of Prince Siegfried’s coming of age. Invitations have been sent to distant kingdoms\, and potential brides are already on their way. Tomorrow\, he must choose the one who captures his heart. As dusk falls\, he decides to head to the lake to hunt.\nScene II: The Lake The wicked Rothbart rejoices: everything is going according to his plan. He transforms young women into white swans\, among them the beautiful Odette\, to whom Siegfried must swear eternal love. At the lakeside\, they meet. The Prince is captivated by the girl's beauty and the tenderness of her soul. His heart trembles he is convinced he has found his true love.\nACT II\nScene III: The Palace Everything in the palace is prepared for the grand ceremony. The guests assemble\, and the list of potential brides is set. Enchantingly beautiful princesses from various nations dance for Prince Siegfried. However\, he cannot make a choice his heart belongs only to Odette. Suddenly\, an uninvited candidate is announced. Rothbart has prepared another test: he presents the Black Swan\, Odile Odette’s double. She is mesmerizingly beautiful and outshines everyone. Bewitched by her charms and casting aside all doubt\, Siegfried swears eternal love to Odile. But as soon as the vow is spoken\, the magic shatters. The Prince hears Odette’s cry and his heart desperately calls out for her. He realizes his grave mistake. Can his beloved ever forgive him? Panic ensues in the palace. Rothbart triumphs\, knowing the worst for Siegfried is yet to come.\nScene IV: The Lake The lake is turbulent; a storm is brewing. Odette is restless\, her soul in agony. Rothbart maintains control\, waiting for Siegfried for the final\, decisive test. Siegfried appears. He has broken his vow! He has betrayed his love and destroyed his own ideal!\nHe begs Odette for forgiveness\, trying to explain that his consciousness was manipulated. He could never intentionally betray his love. The evil genius Rothbart rises before them. Siegfried finally realizes who this man truly is: both the swans and Odette are under his spell\, and even he\, Siegfried\, is powerless against this dark force. Only his crossbow can stop the demon! Siegfried fires at Rothbart\, but alas love has been betrayed\, evil remains unpunished\, and his beloved is dead. In utter despair\, Siegfried finds no place for himself in this world. He chooses to be with Odette in the afterlife\, sacrificing himself for love and throwing himself into the abyss after her...\nEpilogue The first rays of the rising sun appear on the horizon... The evil sorcerer is disappointed: true love does exist if one is willing to sacrifice themselves for that sacred feeling. He ends the dream. The young man awakens... Was it all just a dream that vanished without a trace? No! His love and pursuit of ideals have not disappeared. Everything he experienced remains with him. As a reward\, fate sends him a priceless gift. A girl appears before him the real one he has dreamed of all his life\, the embodiment of Odette from his dream. She is the one he loves and admires! They run toward each other\, toward their happiness. They have their dreams; they have their love. They have each other. "Thy will be done\, on earth as it is in heaven..."\nThe Genius of Evil\, Rothbart\, watches them. He is powerful\, but defeating true love is beyond his reach. While he cannot be destroyed\, he can be conquered. Rothbart departs.\n

Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave\, based on the novel The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas. Premiered at Teatro La Fenice\, Venice\, on March 6\, 1853.\nSYNOPSIS\nACT I\nThe courtesan Violetta Valéry welcomes guests to a party at her Paris salon. Among the attendees are Flora Bervoix\, the Marquis d'Obigny\, Baron Douphol\, Gastone de Letorières\, and a new admirer\, Alfredo Germont.\nAlfredo\, who has long adored Violetta from afar\, joins her in a "drinking song" (Brindisi). As music drifts from the next room and guests move to dance\, Violetta suddenly feels faint and retreats to her room to recover. Alfredo follows her and\, finding them alone\, confesses his love. Violetta initially resists\, claiming love means nothing to her. However\, moved by his sincerity\, she promises to meet him the following day. As the guests depart\, Violetta wonders if he could be the one she truly desires. Ultimately\, she chooses her freedom\, though Alfredo’s voice singing outside seems to challenge her resolve.\nACT II\nSeveral months later. Alfredo and Violetta are living in a country house near Paris. He sings of their mutual devotion. The maid\, Annina\, reveals to him that Violetta has been selling her jewelry to maintain the household. Stunned\, Alfredo leaves for the city to settle their financial affairs. Violetta returns to find an invitation to a party at Flora Bervoix's home. She has no intention of returning to her old life\, but trouble arrives in the form of Alfredo’s father\, Giorgio Germont.\nThough impressed by Violetta’s noble character\, Germont demands she leave his son; their scandalous relationship threatens the engagement of Alfredo’s sister. With a heavy heart\, Violetta eventually yields. Alone and devastated\, she writes a farewell letter to Alfredo and accepts Flora’s invitation. Alfredo returns unexpectedly; Violetta\, barely controlling her emotions\, reminds him of how much she loves him before rushing out. A servant delivers the letter\, and Germont tries to console his son with memories of their family life in Provence. Discovering Flora’s invitation\, Alfredo suspects Violetta has left him for another lover and vows to confront her at the party.\nACT III\nScene 1: Flora’s Party Marquis d'Obigny informs Flora that Violetta and Alfredo have separated. The floor is cleared for entertainment: a group of fortune-telling gypsies and matadors. Alfredo arrives\, makes bitter remarks about love\, and begins to gamble. Violetta arrives with Baron Douphol\, who challenges Alfredo to a game of cards. The Baron loses a small fortune to Alfredo. Violetta begs for a private word with Alfredo. Terrified of the Baron's temper\, she implores Alfredo to leave. Alfredo misinterprets her concern and demands she admit she loves the Baron. Broken\, she pretends it is true. Enraged\, Alfredo calls the guests together\, publicly denounces his former love\, and throws his winnings at Violetta’s feet. Giorgio Germont enters just in time to witness this and condemns his son's behavior. The guests rebuke Alfredo\, and Baron Douphol challenges him to a duel.\nScene 2: Violetta’s Bedroom\, six months later Dr. Grenvil informs Annina that Violetta is dying of tuberculosis and has little time left. Alone\, Violetta rereads a letter from Germont\, informing her that the Baron was only wounded in the duel and that Alfredo\, now knowing the truth\, is on his way to ask for her forgiveness. Violetta knows it is too late. Outside\, the streets are filled with the sounds of a carnival. Annina enters to announce Alfredo’s arrival. The lovers joyfully plan to leave Paris forever. Germont and the doctor arrive as Violetta summons a final burst of energy. She feels life returning to her\, but it is a final surge; she falters and falls dead at her lover's feet.\n

The Israelites pray for help against Nabucco\, the King of Babylon\, who has attacked and is vandalizing the city. Zaccaria\, their High Priest\, appears with Nabucco's daughter\, Fenena\, whom the Hebrews are holding hostage. He assures his people that God will not abandon them. As the Israelites leave\, Ismael\, nephew of the King of Jerusalem\, remains alone with Fenena. The two fell in love while Ismael was imprisoned in Babylon; Fenena helped him escape and followed him to Jerusalem. Their conversation is interrupted by the sudden appearance of Fenena's half-sister\, Abigaille\, and a group of masked Babylonian soldiers. Abigaille\, who is also in love with Ismael\, tells him she can save his people if he returns her love\, but he refuses. The Israelites rush back into the temple in a panic. When Nabucco enters with his army\, Zaccaria confronts him\, threatening to kill Fenena. Ismael disarms the priest and surrenders Fenena to her father. Nabucco orders the destruction of the Temple.\nACT II\n"L'Empio\," Apartments in the Palace Nabucco appoints Fenena as regent while he is away at war. In the royal palace in Babylon\, Abigaille discovers a document revealing she is not the King's daughter\, but the child of slaves. Foreseeing a future where Fenena and Ismael rule Babylon together\, she vows revenge against Nabucco and Fenena. The High Priest of Baal arrives with news that Fenena has released the Israelite prisoners. In response to her betrayal\, he offers the throne to Abigaille and suggests spreading a rumor that Nabucco has died in battle. Elsewhere in the palace\, Zaccaria prays for inspiration to convince the Babylonians to renounce their false idols. Ismael enters and is accused of treason by the gathered Levites\, but Zaccaria announces his pardon because he saved a fellow Israelite the newly converted Fenena. An officer rushes in to warn Fenena that the King is reportedly dead and her life is in danger. Before she can flee\, the High Priest of Baal arrives with Abigaille and the Babylonians\, who proclaim Abigaille the new ruler. She is about to crown herself when\, to everyone's shock\, Nabucco appears. He seizes the crown from her\, confronts the crowd\, and declares himself not only their king but their god. For this blasphemy\, he is struck by a bolt of lightning. A triumphant Abigaille claims the crown for herself.\nACT III\nThe Prophecy\, The Hanging Gardens The Babylonians hail Abigaille as their ruler. The High Priest urges her to execute the Israelites\, but before she can give the order\, a disheveled Nabucco rushes in. He asks what will happen to Fenena\, and Abigaille replies that she too must die. When Nabucco searches his robes for the document proving Abigaille's true ancestry\, she snatches it and tears it to pieces. He pleads in vain for Fenena's life. On the banks of the Euphrates\, the Israelites rest from forced labor\, their thoughts turning to their homeland. Zaccaria predicts that they will overcome their captivity and destroy Babylon with God's help.\nACT IV\nThe Broken Idol\, Apartments in the Palace From a window in his apartment\, where he is imprisoned by Abigaille\, Nabucco watches Fenena and the Israelites being led to their execution. Desperate\, he prays to the God of Israel for forgiveness\, promising to convert himself and his people. His sanity is restored; he forces the door open and calls upon his soldiers to reclaim the throne and save his daughter. The execution of the Israelites is imminent. Fenena prays to be received into heaven just as Nabucco rushes in and halts the sacrifice. Abigaille\, filled with remorse\, takes poison and dies\, confessing her crimes and praying for God's forgiveness. Nabucco announces his conversion and sets the Israelites free\, telling them to return to their native land and rebuild their Temple. The Israelites and Babylonians are united in the praise of God.\n
